Agenting Q&As

As one of the newer literary agents, and the first Blak one ever, I get a lot of questions emailed through, especially from mob hoping to have a yarn. Much as I love a good yarn, and I'm always happy for a coffee if we're already at the same event, the reality is I have very little time on my hands with all the hats I wear. I've created this page to help people get started on their journey by answering the questions I get the most here. If you want to suggest a question I can answer, there's a form below.

Do I need an agent?

Short answer, not in Australia. Long answer is more complicated. Here I discuss what an agent does, and doesn't do and what you should expect from a reputable agent.

What is the process for getting an agent?

It depends on the specific agent, we're all very different so READ OUR GUIDELINES! I'll spell out what I expect here.

What is a good author/agent relationship?

What do you want it to be? It's up to you and the agent you find. Treat it like a committed relationship, think about what you need from it.

Why is it taking so long?

Publishing takes a long time. Getting an agent, building a career, all of those things taketime. Settle in for a longer yarn about timings.

Why can't I just email you?

Well, you can, but I don't have much time so what I do have goes to my writers. Everything else is volunteer work.
